Dear Mrs Boutilier,
As a young kid I've always been proud of where I've come from and I'm a firm believer that my community I grew up in made me into the young woman I am today. I was born and raised in Hartford Connecticut and when I was deciding on my idea for capstone I knew I wanted to give back to my community in some shape or form. I attended Dwight Bellizzi in elementary school and one of the core memories I have from my time there is witnessing my classmates or peers attending school without the supplies they needed. Even as a young child I knew this was an issue. For my capstone project I would like to hold a school supply drive at Highcrest Elementary school and donate the supplies to Dwight Bellizzi. As an incentive for the Highcrest Elementary students, the winning grade will get to pick a prize or activity of their choice.
My research question is “How test scores differ from suburban school opposed to urban schools.” This question relates to my capstone because the stress of not having the proper supplies for school could derail the students mind from thinking about succeeding. To get information on schools I will use Edsite. Some artifacts I plan to collect are photos of the school supplies raised and photos of me presenting to the class.
I plan on asking a teacher at Highcrest Elementary to collaborate with me and also to mentor me with the school supply drive. My learning stretch is getting out of my comfort zone by getting in contact with Highcrest Elementary and hosting the drive. Another stretch would be building a relationship with a teacher at Highcrest Elementary to start a mentorship. This is going to push me to make a strong relationship with a teacher who isn't one of my own.
Sincerely,
Samra Avdic
